FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE LECTURERS AND STUDENTS CONDUCT INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE IN NUSA LEMBONGAN TO PROMOTE A CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR SEAWEED AND SIGN A COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH PT ALGA NUSANTARA SEJAHTERA

BALI, July 12, 2026 – As a concrete effort to support environmental sustainability and improve the welfare of coastal communities, an international community service initiative was successfully conducted in Nusa Lembongan, Klungkung, Bali. The International Community Service Program carried the theme, “Empowering Coastal Communities Through Seaweed Product Development, Plastic Waste Management, and Marketing Strengthening Based on a Circular Economy.”

The event was held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at PT Alga Nusantara Sejahtera, Nusa Lembongan. It involved international and interdisciplinary collaboration and featured three experts as keynote speakers who discussed comprehensive community empowerment strategies based on circular economy principles.

Associate Professor Nguyen Thi Ha from Vietnam National University participated online and shared global perspectives as well as successful experiences in coastal management and product innovation in Vietnam that could be adapted to the local context in Bali.

Prof. Ketut Suada from Udayana University delivered a presentation on quality standardization and post-harvest process innovation aimed at increasing the added value and market competitiveness of seaweed commodities.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gede Setiawan Adiputra from Udayana University focused on strengthening marketing management, utilizing digital technologies, and integrating circular economy principles so that production waste can be minimized and transformed into economically valuable products.

The activity was attended by lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, who served as facilitators and mentors; students from the Master’s Program in Biotechnology, who contributed innovative ideas based on biotechnology research; and local communities and seaweed farmers in Nusa Lembongan as the main beneficiaries of the program.

Throughout the activity, participants enthusiastically attended the presentations and took part in interactive discussions. Three key areas were identified as the main conclusions and follow-up priorities of the International Community Service Program:

1. Product DiversificationTransforming raw seaweed into higher-value processed products, both food and non-food, through agricultural biotechnology approaches.
2. Plastic Waste ManagementProviding education on plastic pollution mitigation in coastal areas to maintain the quality of seawater used for seaweed cultivation.
3. Circular Economy Development
   Designing a supply chain in which production residues and packaging waste can be reintegrated into the local economic cycle.

In addition to the educational sessions, one of the most important moments of the event was the official signing of a Cooperation Agreement between the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, and PT Alga Nusantara Sejahtera.

This strategic partnership is intended to serve as a long-term legal framework for strengthening collaboration between academia and industry. In the future, the cooperation will focus on the downstream development and commercialization of biotechnology research, student internship programs, and continuous assistance for local seaweed farmers to improve their competitiveness in the global market.

Through the signing of the Cooperation Agreement and the successful implementation of the international community service program, PT Alga Nusantara Sejahtera and the seaweed farming community in Nusa Lembongan are expected to become a model for an independent coastal region that successfully integrates local potential with global sustainability principles.
